How is HR Changing?
Let’s take a look at the HR role before the evolution starts.
Back then, workplaces were still in the traditional thinking era, where teamwork and collaboration were not at the top of the mind. Important discussion about business goals and growth happened only surrounding the bosses or the management. How about HR? When people heard about HR back then, they would think of someone as a supporting role of a company to manage the payroll and administrative tasks that involve employees. Very little people paid attention to HR.
In the early 2000’s, workplace culture and style slowly changing towards a more forward-thinking.
Companies started to acknowledge the importance of culture and collaboration among the employees and this led to the term “treat the employee as a human” and/or “employee is part of the family”. This is when the HR role started to expand more strategically. How? Let’s take a look below.
- Industrial Relation
In this role, HR is the bridge between employees and top management. Any disputes that happen among the employees and the management will be needing the HR as the middle person to ensure that the dispute and the solution are all according to the employment law in the country. HR is expected to have a deep knowledge of the said law to protect both company and employees.
- Talent Acquisition
Certain roles and skills are needed by a company based on the strategies and how they are operating. Hiring is now a lot different than before, where companies didn’t put soft skills and core competence as priorities. HR who is focusing on talent acquisition is expected to incorporate an in-depth evaluation, starting from understanding the role needed, the specific requirements, and most importantly, the behavior and the thinking way of the future employee.
- Compensation and Benefit
Workplaces have been developing, and so does the employment law. Nowadays, salary is not the sole discussion when it comes to paying employees. Compensation and benefit are incorporated as a value and respect towards employees. At the same time, this is also a form of motivation. Of course, compensation and benefit can’t be decided easily. Many aspects involved around it and this is when HR as the compensation and benefits specialist appear to assist the management in deciding the perfect arrangement to support both companies and employee’s wellness.
HRBP is one of the new terms that occur in the HR world. BP stands for Business Partner. By the title itself, we know that HR is now part of the essential role in a company. Strategies are made by involving HRBP as they are the ones to give input to the strategies from the HR side. So, it is not surprising that this role works very closely with the top management and the leaders of each team.
As time goes by, changes and evolution will surely happen in the company whether it is small or big. Everybody, including HR, is expected to be agile and fast-adapt of the workplace environment.
